Environmentally-responsible recycling of contaminated soils

GFL operates 11 soil remediation facilities across North America that collectively manage around 3.5 million tons of soil per year. These include seven Class 1 soil management sites and three reuse sites in Ontario, one soil remediation facility in Manitoba, one in Saskatchewan, and one in New Jersey. All our soil remediation facilities are licensed and fully regulated by local environmental authorities, operating to the highest standards of safety and quality.

Our facilities commonly treat contaminated soils from gas stations, commercial and residential infrastructure projects, and soils impacted by road salt. We employ bioremediation techniques to improve the quality of contaminated soils so they can be reused, which provides an environmentally-responsible, energy-efficient and competitive alternative to landfill disposal.

We also accept clean, excess soil from projects that require off-site disposal. Our soil facilities are predominantly situated close to urban centers where most large source sites are located, which decreases site-to-facility transportation distances and helps contribute to reducing GHG emissions.

Our recycled soils are beneficially reused for a wide variety of construction, agricultural, and redevelopment undertakings. Using recycled soils in construction and development projects reduces the need for raw materials, which not only benefits our customers by lowering their project costs, but also helps them to attain sustainability objectives and promote a true circular economy.
